also yes there is evidence it works. WWII Canada introduced rent and price controls. companies still made profits, and rents and prices only rose a few percent over the war instead of the dozens of percent we see per year now.

Multiple things are true at the same time. The US government doesn't invest enough in housing, supression of market rate housing via zoning and other means is the primary driver of the housing crisis, NYC style rent control hurts renters writ large.

So just upend the entire paradigm of housing as a free market asset and wealth building vehicle for the middle class? Okay, I guess. But you gotta be honest that’s what your goal is. Not just “make housing cheaper.” ALSO the government interferes TOO MUCH in the housing market, exerting downward pressure on supply with various laws and regulations. That’s a major reason prices are so high.

So your point is that the housing market that is a very diverse market is the exact same as a closed off market of a product that is not diverse? Okay ill ask did rent control work in greenland? Only the government owned properties in Holsteinborg in it’s time? NO!! just like all rent control it hurts the people not the government and only slightly hurts the private investors. Instead the government should only focus on supplying more housing and stop multinational corporations from buying them

No. House and rent prices are out of control largely due to local zoning laws. It’s just that simple—we need to build way more. Especially in cities. It would help if we didn’t tariff building materials, though.
