The person who came in killed him, and since Tony is the protagonist, we see the death from his perspective — and once he’s dead, nothing is seen anymore.

It goes back to way earlier in the series when he was asked what he thought happened when you died he replied with “nothing it just goes black” I thought it was quite brilliant of an ending

Tony is in hell already during this scene. He is re-living his death over and over. When he walks in he can see himself sitting down already. When the screen goes black it restarts and tony walks back into the diner.

Nobody pays attention to the beginning of the scene when Tony walks in and sees himself sitting down. He's 💀 and that's his hell. He's watching it over and over.

I binged the Sopranos for the first time last year. the ending was perfect. it was also incredibly obvious what happened. the episode even starts with him laying in bed but the way it's framed makes it look like he's in a coffin

I read an article years ago of an interview of the creator of the show and he said it was always meant to show that Tony was killed.
