Ghusl is the Islamic ritual bath required to remove major ritual impurity, such as janabah (following sexual intercourse or ejaculation). It is important to perform it correctly so that one can resume acts of worship that require purification. 1. Evidence from the Qur’an Allah says: “And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves.” — Qur’an 5:6 Allah also says: “And they ask you about menstruation. Say, ‘It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation…’” — Qur’an 2:222 These verses establish the importance of purification and the rules related to menstruation. 2. The Sunnah method: Step by step According to the authentic narration of ‘Aishah (رضي الله عنها), the Prophet ﷺ performed ghusl in the following manner. Make the intention in your heart to purify yourself. No specific verbal formula is required. Wash both hands, then wash the private parts and remove any impurity. Perform wudu as you would for prayer. Wash your head thoroughly, ensuring water reaches the roots of your hair. The Prophet ﷺ poured water over his head three times. Wash your entire body, ensuring water reaches every part, including the armpits, navel and other skin folds. Washing the right side before the left is a recommended practice. 3. Common mistakes to avoid Leaving dry areas of the body or failing to wet the hair roots. Believing that soap or shampoo is compulsory. Clean water is sufficient. Thinking that a particular spoken du'a is required for ghusl. Wasting excessive amounts of water. 4. Important clarification For ghusl to be valid, the essential requirements differ somewhat among Islamic schools of jurisprudence. In particular, the Hanafi school requires rinsing the mouth and nose, while other schools differ on their classification. To be safe, rinse both your mouth and nose as well as washing your entire body. May Allah grant us understanding of His religion and accept our purification and worship. Ameen
