What I expected. Black walnut is strong and moderately hard, but it’s not as tough or shock-resistant as traditional handle woods like hickory or ash.

With a different piece, you could maybe get it to work, but walnut just isn't as strong. It would've looked fantastic though 😁

I’d try a hard maple next time walnuts gorgeous but it seems the grain isn’t quite tight enough for fun stuff like that.

I'm no woodworker or expert so I could be off base and I'm not trying to say you did anything wrong I'm just asking questions. 1.) Isn't maple strong? Seems natural for a Canadian to use maple. 2.) I've seen toolmakers get axe heads on by malleting the base of the axe instead of hitting the axehead in like that, would your technique have possibly caused the handle to break like it did? Lastly love your content.
