This donkey arrived at our shelter just yesterday, but the trauma he carries is far older than a day. He is so frightened that even the slightest movement towards him makes him step back in fear. Many of the animals who come to us have lost their trust in humans. They have known pain, neglect, and suffering for so long that kindness feels unfamiliar to them. Rehabilitating them takes more than treatment—it takes patience, dedication, time, and a piece of our hearts. As rescuers, we don’t just heal their wounds; we carry their pain with us. We celebrate every small victory, every step forward, every moment they begin to trust again. Their happiness becomes our happiness, and their suffering breaks our hearts. Every day is a battle—not just for the animals, but for the people who fight for them. We witness their pain, we share their journey, and we give everything we can to help them heal. And sometimes, despite all our efforts, they leave this world. When they do, there is heartbreak, but there is also a small sense of peace knowing they spent their final days surrounded by love instead of suffering.
