My favorite attendance policy for a class was “Come to class or bad things will happen.” When asked, the prof provided data demonstrating a correlation between low attendance and poor course grades.

I see both sides. I did engineering, which had no attendance req. some people came, some didnt. but liberal arts classes, like a small English elective, seem to require attendance for the discussion to mean anything

Are there classes where attendance is necessary bc there are things you need to do in that class? Yes. But then you’re not penalizing them for “skipping class” you’re penalizing them for not doing the work that would be done in that class, which is totally valid. But if the only thing they’re missing is your teaching time, there’s no reason to penalize them for that

grades are *meant* to be a certification of the level of knowledge or skill you achieved in the given area. they shouldn't be used as measures of good behavior (attendance) or of how hard they worked (shouldn't get a good grade just bc you worked hard if you didn't actually develop your knowledge/skills up to a certain level).

no. discussion is important for classes unless you teach something incredibly basic. life is not black and white and we need to discuss, which requires attendance.

I try to provide my students everything they need online so if they miss class, they won’t get behind. In class, I try to provide them experiences they may not be able to create on their own like collaboration in small groups or expanded explanations to relate what they’re learning in class to real life. I feel like encouraging them to come to class and making it meaningful and enjoyable, while not penalizing them if they miss class, is the ideal compromise.

I just hate being penalized for missing one day of class. Its stressful and penalizes me for being sick. Thats why all the college students who get sick first and dont bother to wear a mask or sanitize get the rest of us sick. And like I wish they would stay home but I get it because the professor is strict on attendance. And professors who are sticklers on attendance are the same ones who don't really excuse absences. Like Im not paying 20 bucks at urgent care for them to tell me I have a fever.

it's not always personal tbh and even if it is the student is more important than the professors ego. I'm disabled and traveling to class takes so much energy that I'm not able to pay attention to the lecture itself anymore and it's frustrating because I have to go because the attendance is graded but I know I can learn better when I'm doing it asynchronously. also lectures in general don't really work for me personally even before I got sick

TBH, I appreciate the mandatory attendance. In earlier years I lacked the discipline to attend class regularly on my own unless there was a penalty. Now I’ve adapted to the strict attendance policy and I’m happy it was there because now I’m confident I’d show up without one. I don’t feel non-attendance was ever mostly about the value of the lecture, but my past apathy in my education. Once the attendance policy changed, my grades went up up up.

Something else to keep in mind: if a given teacher's "instruction" is highly valuable to many students, that doesn't mean all students get equal value from it. Someone who doesn't attend much might just already know a lot of the material. (I was that student in a few classes)

I teach a level 1 programming class. My students fall into one of three categories. 1. they are completely computer illiterate and they just need a computer credit. 2. they are genuinely interested in computer programming but beginners... 3. they have been programming for 10 years on their own projects and could probably teach the course. I usually prefer category 3 students not come to class and just turn in the work. Their questions scare the shit out of the other 2 categories of students.

experienced prof here. it is true that what matters is how well students do on tests and writing papers. some who don't come to class are students who should never have been admitted to any college.

I hate mandatory class attendance. I’m already planning to come. I do NOT have the money to go to a doctor. I know when I don’t feel good enough to show up, and that’s not always due to something a doctor can/needs to write off, and I shouldn’t be penalized for knowing my limitations when it comes to typical lecture classes.

To a certain extent and for certain subjects, sure. But a lot of courses are designed for some sort of graded assessment to occur during each class through active participation, engagement with the material, etc. Not just tests.

My professor said I was plagiarizing homework coz I never show up to class. He “caught” me that day only because I showed up for the exam. He said there’s no way I could do the homework without going to his class, I must be copying someone else. I got a 100 on that exam.

See so my major is Education and Psychology, and I want to be a high school teacher one day after I finish pursuing my career as a professional fighter. So if my student skipped my classes and still passed every test with like a B or better, I’d just talk to them to tell them, “Hey clearly the material in the class is very intuitive to you or you study outside of class, so no penalty for not showing up to class” but I’d also ask why he doesn’t come to my class out of curiosity so I can be a better teacher
