Them giving Mulan powers takes away all the hard work in determination that defined Mulan in the original movie. Mulan didn’t get ahead by being the chosen one - she was at an extreme physical disadvantage compared to her peers and she got ahead through will power and hard work

honestly i think the movie this wanted to be could’ve been really interesting if 1) it wasn’t attached to the franchise of Disney’s Mulan/wasn’t advertised as an adaptation and instead was just a new take on it entirely and 2) was written by a real Chinese author trying to represent their culture. like if a Chinese author announced a YA book with a premise like what disney was seemingly trying to do (young girl replaces her father in the army under a male name and discovers magic powers and faces off against a evil army and a sorceress while exploring gender presentation and roles or whatever), i would TOTALLY read it that sounds sick. but as a live action adaptation of a beloved animated movie, written and directed by white people, it just doesn’t work.
