@aaron.the.rn: I don’t mean to be political but this is personal. Right now, in the Philippines, there is an ongoing investigation centered on billions of pesos allocated for flood management initiatives, turned “ghost” projects, as funds are diverted to a small group of favored contractors who flaunt their ill gotten wealth on social media. Imagine stealing from taxpayers’ money to fund your lavish lifestyle while people meant to benefit from it drown. Every peso stolen is a life put at risk: families left underwater in floods, neighborhoods destroyed, futures washed away. This is where it gets personal. On my third year in Nursing School, my family was a victim of flooding and all my nursing books got destroyed. I prioritized securing my notes, my Operating Room cases and my uniforms while the rest was left in the rubble as we had to evacuate for safety ASAP. Could this have been prevented? Probably so. Truth be told, I became a nurse not just to care for patients, but because like thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers, I was forced to look for a future outside my own country. Not because I stopped loving the Philippines — but because corruption kept stealing every chance we had to thrive at home, a system we are forced to accept as a a norm. I hope more people outside the Philippines become aware of this issue and may justice be served. I do not wish ill of these corrupt politicians, businessmen and their cronies, but I am praying to spread the word to international media so this perpetual system can be abolished.
