So did we watch the same movie? Jake took his brother’s position, not Norm’s. The avatar’s are insanely expensive and are bred from their drivers own dna and Na’vi dna. This would’ve meant that if Jake didn’t take the position, they would’ve had to throw out a corpse that was well over millions of dollars to produce.

Norm did work incredibly hard, but he was just that he was a scientist, which means he was analytical. He knew everything about the Navy, but Jake was able to become one and Norm got it in the comics. He has a Navi wife and babies of his own.

I forgot how he was put in that position but it makes sense the military wanted a soldier rather than somebody like that for their interests. Norm is a scientist who is fascinated by the navi, not someone willing to destroy them. I really don't remember if it was the military who put the mc there or not but if so that would explain it.
