i have a similar experience with my grandmother. she passed in april. i couldn’t bring myself to call her when she was still living, but every time she visited (she lived out of state) i was with her—eating burger king at the park, driving around the block to see the neighbor’s holiday displays, just bathing her. i could twll she wasn’t enjoying her time with me sometimes and often she would diminish me, but every time she left i saw the ghost of her giving me one of her stuffed unicorns to take home so i wouldn’t miss her. i felt like because i wasn’t there for her in her last days making sure she was still taken care of i was okay with whatever happened to her when she got home, like i was waiting for the phone call saying she was gone. the truth was my grandma left when my grandpa passed 20 years ago. it wasn’t anything i did. it wasn’t anything she did. his passing just hardened her, and in her passing i’ve learned to forgive her. i thought i needed to hear the sorrys in order the feel complete, but i hear them in the way roses suddenly appear in my walks, in the compliments strangers share on days i feel the crumbiest. i hope you find that peace soon too. i’m very sorry for your loss 💕

There was a time where we would cry every time I had to go back home after visiting 4 states away… I love her so much, I know it’s just a simple call but, I haven’t spoken to her in over a year but I just, don’t want to. She has hallucinogenic dementia… and I know calling her even just for a quick chat would be everything to her. But it hurts so bad talking to her when she forgets everyone and everything…
