Who is this random seal that happened to be in a pub in 1948? How did it even get there? Why was it at a pub? What was it doing? Meet Koo Koo the seal. Who worked at the Cross Keys pub, Boston, Lincolnshire. Four-month-old Koo Koo worked at the pub, everyday, doing honest work. But her mission was actually much bigger than what meets the eye. World War Two had just ended three years earlier. Thousands of soldiers returned home permanently blinded by explosions, gas attacks, and shrapnel. Because of this, The St. Dunstan's institution was formed in order to help these soldier’s rebuild their lives. But rehabilitation costed enormous amounts of money that the government, frankly, couldn’t afford So communities got creative. And that’s where KooKoo came in. Koo Koo performed tricks, banged on refrigerator doors, and charmed pub customers. Greeted everybody with a flipper shake. And all of this meant donations going straight into her little collection box But how much difference could this small town seal do for the soldiers? In just two weeks, Koo Koo raised thirty pounds. Whic might not seem alot, but that's equivalent to over $1,000 today. From one pub. Multiply that across months of work, and this seal was really help funding the rehabilitation of the soldiers. World War Two blinded an estimated 16,000 British servicemen. St. Dunstan's helped them learn to read Braille, find jobs, and assimilate back into daily life. And a four-month-old seal became one of their most dedicated fundraisers. Can everyone say Thank You For your service to KooKoo? #seals #animals #cute #DidYouKnow
