Well.. as a former service advisor, maybe techs SHOULD get humbled. About 10% of the techs I worked with were solid people. The rest had bad attitudes and had the weird assumption that only they could do what they do

Leave the dealerships. I did after 20 years of BS. Working for an independent is so much better. The owner of my current shop gives us every other Friday off, weekends off, takes us to Vegas for SEMA every year, lets us borrow his boat, cars and toys anytime we want. And if a tech wants to work in the office or be a mobile tech he makes an opening for them. Not flat rate, pays hourly plus bonuses. Awesome pay, ample PTO. You just have to look elsewhere.

there are a lot of parts changers. But really good tech not enough. It’s one of the problems I deal with on a day to day at my shop. On top of that if you have reach a point that you are that good your only next step is opening up a shop.

Been a dealer tech for 26 years, make excellent money, but just feel stuck. At 44 years old my body is beat. Sure as hell can’t do this another 20 years. Wish I knew what else to do.

That was me 6 years ago. Wanted to move up to management. After managers were fired 3 times in a year. Was told I made too much for them and couldn’t be replaced. Moved to another dealer. Same story. Ended up leaving and now working on my own shop. Pay sucks. But Family is supportive. Mentally it is so much better.

Good technicians should be making 30% to 35% of the door rate. Apprenticeships should be hourly for at least a year. lower technicians should be hourly with incentives for over 40 flag hours.

As a bmw master technician, i know we’re not the only ones feeling this. It sucks how stuck we can become. I love this career but i also don’t see myself turning wrenches forever.

I was thinking of the same thing. Looking around where else would I go. I would be taking a pay cut. Where else would I go to make 185k. Stuck here for ever unless I take a pay cut
