pov: “who’s that red-haired guy?” the question had been circulating around campus for weeks. honestly, you were tired of hearing it. everywhere you went, someone seemed to be talking about him. and unfortunately—you knew exactly who they were talking about. your friend leaned against your desk and pointed toward the courtyard below. “seriously, though. who’s that?” you followed her gaze and immediately spotted him—the bright red hair, familiar posture, and effortless confidence. even from a distance, you recognized him instantly. your chest tightened. “his name is heeseung.” your friend immediately turned to you. “how did you know that?” you froze. only for a second, but it was enough. “i just heard people talking.” a lie. because the truth was much simpler. you knew his name because years ago, you used to say it every day. you knew his name because he used to be yours. heeseung wasn’t just some popular guy. he was your ex-boyfriend. the ex-boyfriend you left behind. the ex-boyfriend who was now somehow more popular, more handsome, and infinitely more difficult to ignore. he looked different now. older, broader shoulders, sharper features, and his hair—the bright red hair suited him annoyingly well. it reminded you of how much time had passed. because the heeseung you remembered had black hair. the kind you’d absentmindedly run your fingers through whenever he fell asleep beside you. you hated that you still remembered things like that. after all—he seemed perfectly fine. you, however, were not. which was why you spent the next several weeks avoiding him. you took different routes, ate lunch at different times, and left classes earlier. and somehow—it worked. until it didn’t. because apparently fate enjoyed embarrassing you. one afternoon, while carrying a stack of books, you turned a corner too quickly. and walked directly into someone. the books immediately slipped from your hands. your heart nearly stopped. because before you even looked up—you already knew. heeseung. only heeseung could ruin weeks of careful avoidance in five seconds. slowly, you crouched to gather your papers. hoping that maybe he hadn’t recognized you. wishful thinking. because the moment you stood up, he was already looking directly at you. and unfortunately—he definitely recognized you. you forced an awkward smile. “sorry.” then you immediately tried walking away. “wow.” his voice stopped you. you froze. heeseung crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow. “that’s all i get?” you turned around slowly. “what?” he looked genuinely impressed. “after all these years?” you stared. he stared back, then finally smirked. “i didn’t realize i became that forgettable.” his sarcasm was exactly the same. “i didn’t say that.” “you acted like it.” “i was being polite.” “to your ex-boyfriend?” you groaned. he laughed and somehow that made everything worse. after that interaction, avoiding him became impossible. because suddenly—he appeared everywhere. sometimes you genuinely suspected he was doing it on purpose. which unfortunately became more believable when he started greeting you first. every time without fail. “good morning.” “heeseung.” “you sound disappointed.” “i am.” “ouch.” you’d walk away. he’d laugh. somehow that became your routine. days turned into weeks. weeks turned into months. and slowly—the awkwardness faded. not completely, but enough. enough that conversations lasted longer, silence felt less uncomfortable, and enough that you started looking forward to seeing him. which was terrifying. because you knew exactly where that road led. the problem was that neither of you talked about the breakup ever. until one evening, the campus was unusually quiet. most students had already gone home. and somehow you found yourself sitting beside him on the bleachers. alone...for once. neither of you spoke immediately. then suddenly. “why did you do it?” he asked. your breath caught. because you knew exactly what he meant.
