@meagan_rdh: Unfortunately, dental anxiety is extremely common and can cause patients to avoid the dentist entirely until they are in pain. Majority of the patients I see on a daily basis have some form of dental anxiety - some more severe than others. Patients with dental anxiety are some of my favorite patients because I feel like one of my biggest strengths as a hygienist is making my patients feel comfortable. I talk to my patients like I’m talking to a friend. It’s never cold, judgmental or sterile. I’ve learned that once I can figure out why a patient hates the dentist, then I’m able to accommodate them better and give advice that is more suitable for them. ❤️ #fyp #dental #dentist #pov #dentalhygienist
If my blood pressure is high because I’m anxious- will they still treat me? That’s my biggest worry because I have horrible medical anxiety & my BP is always high so I’m worried they won’t treat me?!?

I’m autistic and going to the dentist gives me anxiety and I have sensory issues surrounding it, I feel SO judged by professionals… if only the dentists/hygienists near me were as kind and compassionate as you are 😊 this gives me hope, still searching for someone near me (there’s a massive problem getting an NHS dentist in the UK, which doesn’t help)… but thanks for being a light on my journey ♥

I had a horrible pediatric dental hygienist so now I’ve gone years without a cleaning, I need surgery done, but anytime I go to the dentist I will be completely honest and tell them “I’m sorry but I will be your worst patient. I don’t mean to be but I’m terrified of dental work”

My dentist thinks I am a great patient because I freeze (I am scared). So I never complain and raise my hand if I feel a little uncomfortable. I guess it works out? lol

I wish I’d had this experience. I was blindsided by some news and sat there silently in shock. Didn’t raise my voice, didn’t say a word to the lady, next thing I know she is barking at me “why are you mad at ME?” She saw a middle age white woman having an emotional reaction and made a negative assumption of what was coming next. After that my only goal was to get out the office and to the car before the tears started. Didn’t say a word rest of visit. Now I don’t know what to do… go back there and get the work I need. Or go get another evaluation and get the work done later (which is never ideal) but if she already doesn’t like me how am I to be calm enough to get the work done? 😩

I always wear funny/cute scrub caps and it usually goes down with nervous patients well, they’ll tell me I’m scary and I’m like even with my bugs bunny cap? And that usually breaks the ice 🥹

no matter what I do, how well I brush floss mouthwash etc... I always, ALWAYS have at least one cavity, most I've had at once was 5. I love my dentist, he's worked with me since I was little, he's never judged me and has been trying to figure out why I always have cavities. I've heard some awful stories from people about dentists and it makes me very grateful for the one I have

I’m a dental assistant with HIGH dental anxiety (ironic, I know), I’ll never forgot that last time I went for a new patient app and I immediately let my hygienist know about my anxiety. She was accommodating to start, but once I told her what I do for a living, complete 180. It went from being gentle and sweet to just judgement. I didn’t take very good care of my teeth as a teen so it’s catching up with me now. Never going back there again and never telling another office that I’m an assistant.
