As the ocean dried up due to tectonic shifts, the remaining salt mixed with minerals under intense heat and pressure, creating solid rock salt. Mined in eastern Pakistan's Punjab province, workers use tools to break the salt from cave walls and haul it to the surface. Some is ground into fine grains for cooking, while larger chunks are cut into bricks or crafted into decorative items like salt lamps, which are especially popular with locals.
