I think that the B size come from the usage of enveloppes. Like for a A5 paper you need a B5 enveloppe.

@Lina: Thank you! I’m visually impaired, and I generally need a lot more room than an A5 can provide to fit everything in a size I can comfortably read. Gonna have to try an A4 or B5 then
