THANK YOU I keep seeing videos where a dog is clearly wanting pets but the owner is going "See he's rolled over but the tongue flicks mean he doesn't REALLY want pets." Mam his tail is wagging and he is staring directly at you, PET YOUR DAMN DOG BEFORE I DO IT FOR YOU.

you need to read a dogs whole body language to be able to understand what they're communicating/feeling. And I would assume dog trainers say the dog is uncomfortable when doing tongue flicks because this is most often the clearest first sign the dog will give to the owner when saying they don't like something being done to them, people are so nonchalant to their dogs and just ignore everything

Omg thank you! I was literally so sad bc whenever I wanted to pet my dog she kept doing that and I started to avoid affection not to make her uncomfortable. Even when she came to me and kept scratching my hand, once I started to pet her she was licking her lips. I really needed that video cus idk I started to feel like I don't know what my dog likes at all

hii, my dog often does mouth sounds with her tongue and lightly opens and closes her mouth (just a tiny bit), all of this while I'm petting her, I always assumed it was a good thing because she is in a very calm state in these situations,but I don't wanna make mistakes. is there any other meaning to it?

Mine is smacking his lips when I pet him, don’t know how better to describe it. Is that him being uncomfortable? He has a bad history and is often insecure so I am not so sure that he is enjoying it and I always stop and check if he wants mir pets. But would be great to know what smacking means 🙈
