The Road-Going STI The road car that enthusiasts could buy followed a similar timeline: · Late 1992: The standard Impreza WRX launched in Japan, featuring a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four (EJ20) and symmetrical all-wheel drive. · January 1994: The first official WRX STI arrived. Subaru Tecnica International (STI) took the WRX and added a blueprinted engine, forged pistons, a more aggressive camshaft, and a higher-capacity intercooler with a water spray. Power rose to around 250 PS. The 22B Legend The most iconic creation from this era was the 1998 22B STI. It was built to celebrate Subaru's 40th anniversary and its third consecutive WRC Manufacturers' title. To homologate wider bodywork for the rally car, Subaru produced a limited run of road cars with a 2.2-litre engine, pumped-up arches (80mm wider), and aggressive styling. Only 399 to 424 units were made, and they sold out almost immediately.
