A jury in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday convicted a 30-year-old man of murdering his girlfriend and unborn child by poisoning her pink lemonade with cocaine. Blaise Taylor was sentenced to life in prison at the jury’s recommendation. Taylor played football at Arkansas State University and worked as a professional scout for the Tennessee Titans from 2019 to 2023. He was working as a defensive analyst for the University of Utah football team when he called 911 in Tennessee on Feb. 25, 2023, and said his girlfriend, 24-year-old Jade Benning, who was five months pregnant, was suffering an allergic reaction in her Nashville apartment. Benning died at a hospital on March 6, 2023, which was her 25th birthday. The case against Taylor is similar to the case against Kouri Richins, a Utah woman convicted of murdering her husband by spiking a Moscow Mule cocktail with fentanyl. Prosecutor alleged Taylor put a lethal amount of cocaine in Benning’s lemonade because he didn’t want to have a child with her. His defense was that Benning had a history of drug and her cocaine overdose was self inflicted. Jurors deliberated three hours on Wednesday (July 1) before convicting Taylor of all counts: 1. Second-degree murder of Benning 2. First-degree felony murder of Benning 3. First-degree murder of the unborn child 4. First-degree felony murder of the unborn child The same jurors who convicted Taylor later that day recommended life in prison for the first-degree murder charges. Judge Steve Dozier sentenced to life in prison after hearing victim impact statements. Taylor must serve at least 51 years before being eligible for parole. The judge on Sept. 9 will sentence Taylor on the second-degree murder count and decide if the sentences run concurrently or consecutively. The eight-day trial began June 23 in Davidson County Criminal Court in Tennessee's District 20. #law #crime #court
