FUN FACT 2: The painting’s title, ‘American Gothic,’ is derived from Wood’s apparent desire to paint “American Gothic people with their faces stretched out long to go with the American Gothic house,” which he noticed featured a single Carpenter Gothic window.

I went into my college course of Art History thinking I was gonna loathe this course. It was actually one of the most impactful and amazing courses I took. Its conversations like this that opened my mind to truly understand art.

As a kid, I always made my silverware at waffle house into this painting! I would put the knife as the man, move the spoon a bit lower as the woman, and put the fork even lower between them.

These are days of the great American dust bowl. There was very little harvest. Therefore, I think the daughter is looking for a way out (hence her looking off into the distance) and persephone personifies that. Escape!

Her brow is noticeably furrowed. She’s looking at something very specific. I’m curious as to why they both have intense expressions, yet absolutely not aligned with each other.

Stoic acceptance of a routined, boring existence because it's all they know. there is strength and honor in the enduring, yet still tinged with some sadness.

The fact that they are not looking the same direction, they have a different view. This also could hint at that same trapped theme.

FUN FACT 1: Wood used his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby, and his sister, Nan Wood Graham, as the painting’s models, and they were painted separately.

To me it sounds like she wants out. She wants to try this new city life way of living but her older father is too traditional and won’t let her leave. He’s very rigid and almost threatening holding his pitchfork. He’s looking directly at us in a stern and commanding way, while she looks longingly into the distance. You mentioned the lines of his shirt match the house and the rounded shapes of her clothing (and her loose curl) match the trees in the background, also not forgetting her necklace of Persephone (possibly worn in rebellion), to me tells a story that she longs to get out while he wants her to stay. The loose curl could also be a small way of showing she doesn’t care about the rules there, like keeping her hair neatly tucked away to protect her virtue or whatever. I can almost imagine what they’d say abd how they’d speak if they were being interviewed in this image

Did Wood have any other famous works? I’ve only ever seen this one. I always think of the Depression when I see it.
