Hi there! Publishing person here. Honestly, a great way to get into books is any bookish related jobs (working at a book store, a lot mag, etc.). Also, a lot of people start with internships! Many internships are remote now. Don’t ignore smaller presses/indie presses. They often have easier barrier to entry and can lead to bigger houses. :)

I worked in trad pub. It is incredibly hard to break into because everyone wants the job, and most of the time the people who are applying are highly qualified. I had four internships (including at big 5s) when I graduated college and it still took me a year to find a full-time job. Editorial is also the hardest to break into because it has the most competition.

I was a pretty popular book blogger when I graduated from college. Went to college in NYC, had three internships, did freelance editing, worked for several authors, and did some stunts at an indie bookstore. I had tons of friends in publishing and got to go to exclusive events. I still could not get hired after I graduated and ended up doing a major career shift. It is….very hard. Remote options are your friend and I would recommend trying to do some digging to do informational interviews.

YA is children’s literature. Most literary agents are remote, so your location is irrelevant. Check BookJobs.com. Jobs at publishers are much more NYC-based. All of it pays peanuts, at least at first.

Everyone who has ever wanted to work in publishing has faced the same dilemma. It's not a new thing. If you want to work at a big publisher you have to move to New York, and it's competitive so no guarantee of a job. Otherwise, find some kind of small publisher in a different region. It might not be ideal, but once you're in, you can figure out where to go from there.
