@sophiemorrisofficial: 100% beef - this front of pack labelling is a farce. I was in Tesco and spotted this beef jerky, with “100% beef” plastered in big bold writing across the front of the pack. But the fact it’s teriyaki flavour is a straight away giveaway that this product can’t be 100% beef as it has to include ingredients to make up the teriyaki flavour. As I always say, the only way to truly know what’s in the food you’re buying is to turn the pack around and read the ingredients… when you read the back of this product you can see the second ingredient is sugar. It also includes salt, soy sauce with maltodextrin, and even sodium nitrite — a preservative I’ve talked about before which is often found in processed meats and is part of the reason the WHO classifies processed meats as a group 1 carcinogen. So after reading the back it’s clear that this product is far from “100% beef”! It’s just another example of how food packaging can be so misleading. The reality is unless you’re checking the fine print, you could easily pick this up thinking it’s a simple dried beef product, when in fact it’s highly processed. This is why I’ll continue to bang the drum for more regulation on what’s allowed to be written on the front of packaging! From speaking with many small Irish producers, I’ve heard stories of them being pulled up on packaging claims, yet big multinationals seem to get away with writing anything… it’s unjust and needs to change. This is exactly why reading labels matters. We can’t just rely on what’s written on the front — we need to turn it over and look at what’s really inside. What do you think of this? I’d love to hear in the comments 👇 #sophiesswaps #foodlabels

I think they mean it’s just beef meat and not any other meat, but it should be worded like that!

In SuperValu last week, purchased Signature Tastes. Fish box. Crispy breaded Irish Haddock with tempura battered prawns and Calamari in a light spice seasoning. Fresh fish Kilmore Quay. Great one might think all caught in Irish waters waters or nearby. Oh no, checked the back and it says Origin Haddock caught in the North Atlantic sea and wait for it Squid caught in the Southeast Pacific Ocean, and to cap it all, Prawns are farmed in Vietnam. How disingenuous is this. Totatally disgusted.
