Their pink hue, especially vivid in ponds like A12, comes from pigment-producing algae (Dunaliella salina) and halobacteria thriving in hypersaline water. Now part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the ponds support over 1 million migratory birds annually along the Pacific Flyway.
