@nhlpreplab: Everyone tells you the same thing about stick length: “Stand straight, stick should reach your chin.” That’s only half the truth. ❌ Here’s the hidden rule no coach talks about ⬇️ 1️⃣ Player type matters: Forwards often use shorter sticks for tighter handling, defensemen longer sticks for reach. 2️⃣ Skating posture: The real test is while you’re in a hockey stance — not standing tall. A stick that feels perfect upright might be way too long once you bend your knees. 3️⃣ Shot style: Shorter = quicker release & better hands. Longer = more power & poke-check range. 👉 The secret: Find your stick length in your GAME stance, not your casual stance. It’s not about your height — it’s about your play style. Most players never figure this out, and it silently kills their game. Don’t be one of them. #HockeyTips #HockeyTraining #IceHockey #HockeySkills #StickLength
I cut my down to my collar bone so when I’m in my hockey stance my whole blade is touching the ice

So I’ve been 6’1-6’4 since I was 13 and I used a shorter stick for most of my career until I started to watch Barkov and realized how much an advantage it was to use a long stick AND still have good hands. Worked a lot on my puck handling and became pretty decent. Everybody is different, try different lengths

I play D. My stick has always gone to my nose. It makes a huge difference in reach.

Yeah, I had to veto a stick recently that my son's father got because it's too long. Cutting it would change the flex too much so he has to wait to grow a smidge/increase upper body strength

AI Overview
Wayne Gretzky used a significantly shorter hockey stick, which reached about the height of his sternum or Adam's apple, and his arms would be nearly straight when holding it naturally, a deliberate choice for comfort and control.

Also your arm lenght relative to the height of your body matters too since you hold the stick in your arms.

Is it that it’s mostly preference? Because it is. There’s no blanket stick rule, jus like there’s no blanket tap job rule or knob rule. Preference guys

my rule of thumb when cutting a stock as a RW/C was standing with no skates, the butt of the stick would be slightly below the bottom lip and the angle would be to drop the blade and the butt would be at your sternum.

I will say shorter doesnt always mean quicker. Yes theres less to bend but if its to stiff or a mid kick point stick it wont be dramatically differently. Every inch is roughly 7 points of flex eirher gained when shortened or added if you add height to it. Low kicks like Triggers and Vapors will be your quick release. You mid kicks like the tacks and nexus (going forawrd new model supreme) will be a more powerful shot. Hybrids like the jetspeed and new Bauer pulse are going to be a mix of low/mid depending on force applied and hand placement.
