🇱🇹✨ Kaunas, Lithuania has a small Old Town that is incredibly walkable! Lithuania’s second-largest city is full of history, beautiful architecture, and one of the most charming Old Towns in the Baltics. With its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and inviting cafés, it’s the perfect place to slow down and explore on foot. Our visit began at Kaunas Castle, a 14th-century fortress that has stood guard where the Nemunas and Neris Rivers meet for more than 700 years. It’s one of the oldest stone castles in Lithuania and a great place to begin discovering the city’s rich history. Just a short walk away is the stunning Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, the largest Gothic church in Lithuania. Its beautiful white Baroque façade and peaceful interior make it one of the highlights of Old Town. From there, we wandered into Town Hall Square, home to the elegant 16th-century Old Town Hall, affectionately nicknamed the “White Swan” because of its graceful tower. The square is lined with restaurants, cafés, and historic buildings, making it a wonderful place to relax and soak in the atmosphere. One of our favorite discoveries was Perkūnas House, one of Lithuania’s finest examples of Gothic architecture. Legend says it was named after Perkūnas, the Baltic god of thunder, after a small statue believed to depict him was discovered within the building centuries ago. Perhaps our favorite part of Kaunas, though, was simply wandering the narrow streets of Old Town. Around every corner we found hidden courtyards, colorful storefronts, cozy cafés, and centuries of history blending seamlessly with modern Lithuanian life. If you’re looking for a Baltic city that’s historic and far less crowded than many of Europe’s better-known destinations, Kaunas deserves a spot on your itinerary. Just keep in mind that Kaunas has quite a few older buildings with worn façades, peeling plaster, or visible maintenance needs. That can make some streets feel less polished than places such as Tallinn, but it is also part of the city’s authentic, lived-in character. #Kaunas #Lithuania #Baltics #OldTown #TravelCouple
