The UN Human Rights Office reports at least 22 people killed and more than 100 injured. The demonstrations, driven largely by young people in Antananarivo, reflect deep frustration with deteriorating living conditions and economic hardship. Security forces have enforced a curfew, using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds. Looting of shops, banks, and politicians’ homes has also been reported. In a televised address, Rajoelina apologised for government failings and pledged support for affected businesses. He also promised to open dialogue with youth, acknowledging public anger over frequent blackouts and water shortages. According to the World Bank, around 75% of Madagascar’s 30 million people live below the poverty line.
