Botflies are parasitic insects known for using human skin as a host for their larvae, most commonly the Dermatobia hominis found in Central and South America. Instead of laying eggs directly on people, the female botfly attaches her eggs to another insect, usually a mosquito. When that insect lands on a person, body heat causes the eggs to hatch, and the tiny larvae drop onto the skin and burrow inside through the bite wound or a nearby pore. Once beneath the skin, the larva begins to grow, forming a swollen lump called a warble, which has a small opening at the center that allows it to breathe. Over the course of several weeks, the lump can become painful, often mistaken for an infected bite, and some people report feeling movement under the skin as the larva shifts. After maturing, the larva forces its way out, falls to the ground, and continues its life cycle. Removal can be difficult because the larva anchors itself with tiny spines, and improper extraction can lead to infection. While cases are relatively rare and mostly limited to tropical regions, the idea of a living organism developing beneath the skin, breathing through a visible hole, is what makes botfly infestations especially disturbing. #thevoidhole #disturbingfacts
