A birth certificate for twins does not say anything about being a multiple. I have identical twins, they have two different individual birth certificates.

OP said there is no “golden child” and I don’t think the parents ever treated any of the kids as if there was, but from Beth’s POV, OP is the golden child. She is the oldest, most responsible, she received the most compliments at the party, she’s the first to have a boy in the family, and her son is going off to a prestigious university. Beth is someone who had been in an abusive relationship and whose life hasn’t gone the way she wanted. there is likely a lot of misplaced resentment. She lied to a good man in hopes he would stay and continued the lie in fear he would leave. Her behavior is likely the result of unprocessed trauma and she needs therapy and help to work on herself to change her behavior. Hopefully she can see her actions only push away those who love her and that she doesn’t need to lie to someone for them to choose her. OP sounds like a very caring and loving sister, I hope their family heals.

as someone who knows someone with this problem. I can tell you that it stems from feelings of abandonment and not feeling seen. it's connected to PDO. Through therapy this person was fortunate enough in that while she had PDO she didn't lack empathy and was able to heal. She finds it difficult at times but is doing well.
