A couple of times a year I go through my cabinets and freezer and write down the contents on dollar tree dry erase boards. As I use things they get crossed off. I have another board where I write meal ideas using what I have. It doesn't work forever (yay messy brain!), but it usually helps me reduce what I have stored.

Making room this time of year is vital. I make two big dinners a year - Christmas and St Patrick’s Day. I start buying what I need now to save a little money. I need space in the freezer. As I use what is there I replace it with stuff for winter.

After Helene (I live in southeast GA) I had to throw out everything from a fridge and two freezers…it hurt. So during our hurricane season this year we ate from the freezer. Saving money, no waste, and emptying the freezer in case of potential storms and power outages.

What I’ve found super helpful is taking an inventory of everything i have in the freezer (and even the pantry) and put it into ChatGPT and have it create me a meal plan using as much as possible without having to buy more.

I would be in a panic if I cleared out my freezer. Growing up with food insecurity I emotionally overbuy when I feel like things look too “empty” even if I have no clue what I’m gonna make - at least I have it. 🤷🏻♀
