Corner crossing — stepping from one piece of public land to another at the exact corner where they meet — has been used for generations to reach millions of acres locked away in the checkerboard land pattern of the West. Earlier this year, the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that corner crossing isn’t trespassing. Eshelman lost. But instead of accepting that ruling, he’s taking his fight to the Supreme Court — and the livestock industry is rushing to his side. The Stock Growers claim they want “clarity,” but what they really want is control. By criminalizing corner crossing, they can keep millions of acres effectively off-limits, turning public resources into private playgrounds for an elite few. It also blocks the public from reaching and monitoring many grazing allotments, shielding poor management from scrutiny. The stakes couldn’t be higher. A Supreme Court ruling for Eshelman could set a dangerous precedent, closing the door on public access not just in Wyoming, but across the West. Lands open for decades to hunt, hike, and enjoy could be locked away behind “No Trespassing” signs paid for with your tax dollars. Western Watersheds Project has joined with other conservation groups to defend public access because we know what’s at stake: the very idea that public lands are for the public.
