It sounds noble. But as Dr. Becky Kennedy points out, chasing happiness as the goal wires kids to fear discomfort — and sets them up for fragility later in life. And this isn’t an isolated myth.
Modern parenting is full of them. We’re told to trust instinct, when instinct often just means repeating how we were parented. We scroll past endless advice stamped evidence-based, without realizing much of it is built on the wrong target. And today’s parents face challenges no generation has before: a high cost of living, limited support networks, and an online world that threatens your child’s very sense of self. In this way, one could argue parenting has never been harder. That’s why we turned to Dr. Becky — Ivy League–trained, with years of private practice, and now the preeminent voice in parenting today. For millions of parents, her work has become a lifeline: cutting through myths, reframing false goals, and showing what it really means to raise kids who are safe, seen, and resilient. In this episode, we discuss: 1) Why parenting isn’t just raising kids — it’s re-raising ourselves. 2) The myths of instinct and “evidence-based” advice that lead us toward the wrong goals. 3) Why the aim isn’t happy kids, but resilient ones — and how boundaries shape that. 4) How to navigate modern pressures: from putting kids’ needs first to the dangers of devices and social media. 🎧 Full episode now available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple. Adriana :
I dont think people mean happy in a superficial way. I think people mean have the tools to find joy and be present in life and find this deeper connected state so many of us have lost.

Happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect and going their way. I think what it eludes to, is a general contentment in their ability to navigate challenges, find solutions, and cope with outcomes positively. Also, it should be pointed out, that every kid is different, and happy looks different for every child. One of my kids deals with severe anxiety- her happy looks very different than my neurotypical child.

This sounds like someone with a strong underlying anxiety themselves speaking. Because those with a positive outlook in life, are naturally happy. The best thing to teach a child is to see the glass as half full. My son thanks me for always seeing and pointing out the beauty in the world. And passing that gift on to him!! He has friends that don’t, and thanks God he does. He attributes this to me.💕

I want my kid to be happy....in the long run. Ill absolutely allow her to fail, allow her to be challenged, and allow her to be uncomfortable so that she can learn how to be happy in spite of it all.

It’s funny because if you look at the data, people are at their most satisfying life when they get to experience accomplishment.

Uh no. That’s not what I mean when I say I want my kids to be happy. I lean into tension and discomfort. And STILL want them to be happy. Don’t be reductionist.
