@speedifylive: Hard drives (HDDs) are returning for AI and machine learning. While SSDs are the fastest data storage option for personal devices, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are pushing cloud providers to use more HDDs vs SSDs, because Hard drives are cheaper per gigabyte, and AI training requires petabytes of storage, where cost and density matter more than speed. HDDs are projected to supply about 80% of hyperscale and cloud data center storage through 2028. Most online data sits on hard drives. The trade-off of using HDDs is higher latency and slower random access compared to SSDs. But for large sequential training workloads, the HDD remains the most popular option for storage infrastructure. This video explains why AI workloads depend on HDDs, why hard drive wait times are growing, and how this will shape data centers through 2030. #pcgaming #ainews #technews #technology #techtalk

do you think hard drives will stay relevant past 2030?

hdd is more reliable. SSD has about 10000 rw and its done

SSDs are not good for data storage .Easiest way to lose your data for good

SSD have limited number of writing. HDDs don't. For the virtualization systems there is serious challenges with the wearout of SSDs.

Just skipping the fact that HDDs don't die after a certain number of read/write operations?
SSDs literally just stop writing and become read only assuming it survives that step.
I still have HDDs that have been read/writing for many years and are still going strong.
Lost track of the amount of times my Game SSD has needed to be replaced.

What about redundancy and NAS devices?, trad hard drives will always be better, with RAID options and less risk of complete failure of the RAID.

The hard drive head does not lift before moving to a different position. It is hovering at a constant hight.
