Honestly River Horse makes so much sense, because Hippos are so dense they dont actually float. Instead, they're heavy body lets them run or "gallop" along the bottom of lakes and rivers at suprising speeds.

I grew up in a house called Scithie Cottage and there was some debate over what the correct translation was. My dad always told us it meant fairy cottage…can someone help confirm or deny this 😂 I’ve tried looking it up but there are lots of different confusing spellings and translations

Hippopotamus translated into many languages is “river horse.” In Mandarin, it’s “he ma” 河=he=river 马=ma=horse. I guess it all stemmed from the original Greek, as pointed out elsewhere in the comments…

I think we’re just missing “angry af” in front of all the various versions of ‘River Horse’. Cause they are. Maybe it’s cause they sunburn so easily. Or maybe they’re mad cause they can’t be manatees, so they decided to be the complete opposite of them. 🤣

Absolutely love this. I grew up in the highlands and moray, the only gaelic word I ever heard was failte. Doric was HEAVILY discouraged. Watching your videos makes me feel closer to the heritage, it’s about time we stopped demonising such a magical culture

Some people making fun of the raccoon call it trash panda! Sometimes they are seen in bins looking for a snack. I love the names for there animals in Gaelic! So totally unrelated, but today is my birthday and I wanted to know how birthdays are celebrated in Scottland. It would be interesting to hear if there are things that differ from the US.

My favorite example of this sort of thing comes from the Zulu language… Their word for penguin is “inyoni yasolwandle engakwazi ukundiza” which literally translated means “the bird that swims and cannot fly”
