@i2c_jason: Don’t use a 3D scanner to make replacement parts. Just don’t do it 99% of the time. Here’s the proper way to handle this. #DIY #project #engineering #3dprinting #cad
Parametric modeling works great for parametric parts. Now try organic shaped parts (80% of automotive) and you’re gonna have a bad time

Scanning is only for reference in building your model or for ultra complex geometry, and that’s it. That’s how we do it for car parts, you scan the engine bay to get your complex dimensional restraints and just make sure your part fits inside of it.

yeah it's great when you're talking about a pin. how about this, I'll come up with an example and send it to you and you do a video on how you're going to measure it accurately and reverse engineer that way and how that's going to be way better than scanning. want to try that?

90% of our work is with 3d Scanner. It’s not the way to scan and use it. Scan it and with the right software it’s a timesaver recreate that part in CAD. For a pen it’s right it’s obviously not that best method but scan a part like car parts or shapes that’s not easy to measure it on other ways a scanner helps.

How do you go about measuring your parts, I feel like a ruler leaves margins of error and I often have to assume normal dimensions? Do you have a fancy caliper you’d recommend?

I’ll give it 10-15 years before the 2D drawing goes to the wayside. Model Based Definition better capture the designers intent, and CAM programs now rely heavily on 3D geometry.

There are rare exceptions, of course. What is so cringe to me is hearing anyone say “just scan it and 3D print it”.

if your env is controlled, & ur scans are actuated & with a ref. a model trained with supervised learning on parts, & tuned w transfer learning a depth model. why couldn't you set one up? is there opensource system of mathematical models correlating solid objects to point clouds?

So I will quibble and argue for surfaces like automotive parts you couldn’t be further from the truth for reverse engineering applications. But I will agree that’s not the main point of argument but as a designer that is an amazing tool to have

3d scanning works perfectly fine now. it may not have worked that way 2 years ago but it's almost exactly perfect prints with AI

For something that is reasonably strait forward sure, but when you get into things like warhammer models scanning if the beat way even if you have to clean it up in cad later

I need to learn cad! I've been using blender but getting tight parameters has been a nightmare. any recommendations?

I hope nobody with the right mind came to the idea to directly print a 3d scan that needs to be functional and fit somewhere

I like to use 3D scans as reference geometry for designing my parts. it is much easier to pull e. g. the radius of the complex curves of a dashboard from a scan. I can do it with cardboard and a ruler, but it's harder.

i like using a 3d scan as a reference if the part im trying to make is either in a hard to reach location or i cant remove it just yet

Who wold even bother to scan such a simple part, that would take 10x more time to scan than to model it. But even if you model it, trying to 3d print it with 0.03mm tolerance on your ender3 would be kinda optimistic 🙈😁

Its painful, you are correct & I've been explaining this to ppl for years, but everyone wants 'easy'. Same goes for AI, yes there are exceptions, but if you need a serviceable model or program, or, or... you will need to understand it AND be able to modify it.

I have to disagree do this for a living and all my parts fit perfectly fine after 3d scanning and cleaning the cad

For more complex parts, does it make sense to measure the elements that must conform to tolerance/shape, and 3-D scan the remainder of the part that doesn’t have those restrictions? Thanks

yes , tray that with surface design objets. 😂😂😂. it is imposible make same exact shape, so i think 3d scaninf works. ofcores if it is gear or machened part easear to remodel it from scratch 🙃

hi :
also replacing an injection molded part with a 3d print 1:1 is rarely successful. injection molding makes for stronger parts than printing. unless you can step up to a significantly stronger material you need to redesign and adapt

This is the difficulty with all the Ai 3D models out there. No History, just Point Clouds, even with some like Zoo.dev you get a STEP file but No Dimensioned Sketches or Feature Trees. Laborious but for thr Time being Fully Building the CAD is the way for Manufacturing.
