…i’m purchasing ebooks bc the people who work to create ebooks deserve to be paid for their work

"an ebook doesn't have any of the qualities that makes buying a book such an enjoyable experience." how is this not a consumerist statement, the enjoyment of books is the reading part lol

I get what you're trying to say with this but ebooks are often more affordable and a lot of indie authors get their sales from ebooks where their physical book wouldn't be as readily available.

E-books are a completely valid way to read, and dismissing them doesn’t help anyone. I run my own publishing support company and work with authors every day (I’m not affiliated with any major publishers or platforms). Many authors rely on e-books to reach readers, especially when printing physical copies isn’t affordable. I’m not a fan of Amazon, but it’s one of the few platforms that actually lets authors get their work out there. The social side of apps like Fable is also valuable bc seeing how others interact with and discuss a book can give perspective, spark conversation, or help you decide a book isn’t for you. Policing how people read doesn’t support authors or literacy. It only makes the problem worse...

….what??? So many indie authors are only available through ebooks that you have to purchase or use KU for. They are not available through libraries bc they don’t have the audience, and they dont have physical copies bc it’s very expensive to produce those independently. While it might be silly to get an ebook for something easily accessible through the library, there are a LOT of books that don’t fall under that. God forbid people support authors in their preferred way

I get the idea of not wanting to support Amazon, but do you really not understand why people would buy an ebook over a regular book? like yeah it doesn’t have a dust jacket, it’s not physical, but it’s also significantly less expensive and more portable

I think we should leave judgmental mindsets behind in 2025. I also think that we should let people read how and what they want to. They’re are also other platforms other than Amazon to purchase e-books, like direct from the author.

Not buying e-books hurts the indie authors more than anyone. SJM would be fine, but there are so many amazing indies signed into a kindle contract and stealing their work to consume it is not the answer.

I’m paying to be able to read the books without waiting “several months” without paying full price for the physical copy. If we just get them from the library, we’re not supporting the author or publisher either.

I moved to Kobo so I could use the library on it! I use it to allow me to read when out and about (we can't use Libby on the kindle in the UK) I also downloaded all my kindle books onto my computer so I could have them forever!

I’m not going to stop buying ebooks. I also utilize my library. I do believe in supporting authors and paying them for their work.

I’m paying the author for their time and energy spent in writing the book I am enoying. Because people deserve to be paid for their art. Also, word to the wise, libraries are ALSO paying a bug corporation upwards of $50 per license for 2-5 licenses for each ebook in their catalogue bc of contract changes the last few years. And a lot of that money? Going to Amazon if that book is available to download through Kindle. I wasn’t aware booktok was in the business of ragebaiting these days.

Hey so definitely purchase your e-books. There are places other than Amazon to purchase them. Don’t steal art. Authors need to make money to live so they can continue to create art. Libraries are a fantastic option if you cannot purchase art, as you were mentioning. Don’t steal.

Amazon is not the only place to buy ebooks! I like kobo, especially because it shows you upfront if the book is drm free or not. imo you should only buy ebooks if you can own them forever, so drm free or you can crack the drm

I agree with not giving money to institutions or organizations that don’t align with us, but I disagree heavily in not compensating artists for their time and work. To me,that’s not consumerism. Anti-consumerism would be encouraging library use, including ebooks through apps like Libby and Hoopla. Those books are still being bought, just not on platforms that are unfavorable

Authentic Mortality :
As a person who reads a lot of indie and smaller authors the only way I can get them is through Amazon most of them do not offer a physical copy initially. The only site they are offered on is Amazon. I am also in an area that has only one public library and it’s only open during businesses hours when I work. I think this is a very narrow view, all ebooks don’t come from Amazon and everyone doesn’t have the space or access to be able to purchase physical books. Paper books tend to be more expensive if you want to own them than ebooks.
