On behalf of the people of Singapore, I thanked PM Lee Hsien Loong today for his four decades of selfless service in government, including 20 years as our Prime Minister. Some leaders help their countries progress in normal times, but flounder in crisis. Some others are unexceptional most of the time, but save their nations from disaster at times of crisis. There is something to learn from both. But few leaders are exceptional both in normal times and when their countries face major threats or crises. PM Lee has been both, enabling Singaporeans to stand tall and stand united through good times and bad. It has been Singapore’s good fortune to have him. I saw first-hand PM Lee’s sense of duty to Singapore and his ability to inspire during my many years of working with him, especially in the different roles I played in his Cabinet before I resigned last year to stand for the Presidency. I have also known DPM @Lawrence Wong for over two decades, and watched him grow as a leader. I have the highest regard for him. He will in my view make an excellent PM for Singapore in the changing times to come. PM Lee met me formally today in connection with his handover of leadership on 15 May. DPM Lawrence Wong met me afterward.
