that's not even the coolest part. you can't store liquid helium normally. it just flows straight through glass like it's a filter or strainer

superfluid helium also "climbs" upwards. and does a whole bunch of wacky stuff. my magnet operates at 2.2K but last summer it drifted to the lambda point and everything freaked out

I took a viscous flows course in my master's program and the professor said on the first day "every fluid is viscous. Except for superfluid helium." Very cool!

Wrong helium freezes it just doesn’t freeze at atmospheric pressure

How do they get it to stir though? Wouldn’t the object they stir it with travel through it without moving anything?

Can you now address the fact that its lack of viscosity also gives it a lack of surface tension and allows it to crawl upwards out of containers?

If it has zero viscosity and after stirring it it never stops…it must take INCREDIBLE amounts of energy to move it to superfluid state…because spins forever sounds awful close to perpetual motion…which doesn’t exist?!?!?!?!?

If we could make an ocean of liquid helium, how would that look? Would there be infinite whirlpools? Would a stone dropped in it make a splash or fall to the bottom or just float there?
