I think the most important part is the fact that the publishers are banking on the existing audience, therefore there is NO WAY to effectively divorce Alchemised from the source material. If you have to caveat ‘it’s so different from HP’ then you have not succeeded in transforming a fic into an original work. It can be done, and the ones that do it well you would pretty much never know that it was once a fanfic.

Had someone once say that there was no difference between fanfiction and works inspired by mythology 🫩 (they replied to a comment I made under a post asking on opinions of reskinned fanfiction to publishing, where I said I didn’t care for it).

The reason the three big Dramione fics of the year are under so much scrutiny is because 1) they are fics based on works by she who must not be named and people are rightly concerned that it will boost her sales, and 2) the problematic marketing using tha fanfic origins. No one batted an eye around the origin of the 50 shades as Twilight fic. A lot of Ali Hazelwood’s books either started as Reylo fic or are hugely Reylo coded and no one cares. Nevermind some of the (gross) real people fic that has been republished in recent years.

The Pizza Hut analogy is perfectly said! The publishing and now film company would most likely not have approached with a deal without having that huge fan base behind it. Wonderful video.

Thank you for saying this because the amount of videos of people trying to say this has been annoying me 😭 we have to be very careful or we’ll get an Anne rice 2.0 and worse

this argument with alchemised is so disingenuous because for months and months it's been talking about how manacled is getting published and articles about published dramione fanfic and suddenly once they realise they're getting backlash they start coming up with these arguments to justify it

It bothers me so much when people pretend it's fully divorced from the source material. As is stands, it keeps JKR relevant and is driving more people to buy HP.

Yes this, I just saw a video where someone was saying Katbasis was less of an original and more of a derivative work then Alchemised becuase it openly works with Alice in wonderland and Dante and that Alchemised was somehow more original cause it scrubbed its serial numbers off and is pretending it has nothing to do with HP and I couldn’t believe we had gotten to that point where people were deliberately refusing to tell the difference between scrubbed fanfiction and inspiration

Also idk, I feel like reskinning fanfiction can work in romance, bc is a really trope heavy genre that’s primarily focused on individual interactions between characters rather than overarching plot and world building -like I don’t think The Love Hypothesis suffers from being a published Reylo and I don’t think is that obvious for ppl outside fandom spaces. But they are trying to position this book as this really complex “intricate high fantasy story about war and loss” and I just don’t see how a work that is heavily derivative of TWO major IPs can do that and still maintain any substance

You explained it so well and broke down every point I’ve been trying so hard to explain to other people. I firmly believe that for a fic to be successfully reskinned into a trad book, it has to be able to stand on its own without marketing related to the original IP. The reason Ali Hazelwood’s books are successful fanfiction scrubs is because none of the marketing relies on it being a former Reylo fic. Is that something people learn about as time goes on? Sure, but it was never marketed as “THE Reylo fic now traditionally published!” and that makes a huge difference

what bothers me most about published fanfiction ie fanfiction changes to be full stories is that they cant rely on everyone already knowing the characters but they still write it as if they assume you do and there for there's little to no development and character

So well said. I’ve been struggling with this for a few weeks now. I think fanfiction is a very joyous place of fandom, but it was always not for profit, & seeing this morph into a commodity has made me deeply uncomfortable

thank you for this! as someone who has been in fanfic spaces for decades i am appalled that publishers think they can come into fanfic spaces, one of the last ~free~ spaces we have, and just pick the easiest cash grab. there have been published fanfics before, this is the first time publishers have actively used the author's BNF (big name fan) status as a promotion for these books, which makes this situation unique. this is only going to further influence the destruction of fandom culture and promote the monetisation of it. we are already seeing a complete shift and disregard of fandom culture and etiquette (reviewing fanfics on goodreads, locking fanfics behind a patreon paywall, publicly reviewing on tiktok, selling binded fanfic) and it's only going to get worse with publishers lurking around fanfic spaces. and also, fandom keeps an IP alive - fandom is directly keeping HP alive and therefore it is supporting JKR, so i cannot engage with alchemised in good faith.

thank you for this bc people are forgetting the reason this got trad pub was explicitly because it was a beloved fan fiction !! it was profitable because so many people were already connected to the characters before it was published

I'm always so obsessed with how well you articulate things in a way that is simple to understand (even coming from someone who is deeply informed on this topic and 100% agrees with you) and accessible to those who are new/ignorant to this conversation

What are your thoughts on eg. the retellings of Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice'? There are multiple books (and movies) which change some parts of the story, but the characters and the skeleton of the story are true to the source material. Since Jane Austen is not longer alive, obviously P&P is not longer 'hers', but wouldn't those new creations still be consider basically fanfics of the original story? They are published, so no longer free, but I'd say most of them copy the og story to much higher degree than even the majority of FF. Hence to me they're basically that, fanfics, not retellings.

i feel a little weird about alchemised bc even though she took everything that belongs to harry potter (example: draco, hermione, legilimency and stuff), the premise of the published version is still the same as the fanfic, and i dont know if that’s bad or not. if i were a fan, i would love to read my favorite fanfic as a book and have it on my shelf, but on the other hand, it is the same as the fanfic, i don’t know if the ethical choice was that she should change everything. i mean, 50 shades of grey was a twilight fanfic and you CANT tell. the immortal instruments was a drinny fanfic and you ALSO CAN’T TELL. so i dont know what is the right thing, thinking not only of the legal but the ethical decision.

I also find that had manacled not been a Harry Potter fanfic to begin with, then it wouldn’t have gotten the attention or book publishing deal at all which is why it becomes a little bit sticky. Think of it this way, had JK Rowling copyright strike the fanfic, would the story have become such a sensation to even receive a 3 million movie deal on its own ? Or is the established HP fanbase what gave the movie studios and publishing companies such confidence to invest in such a story? Not saying their work is lacking by any means, but the characters are just reskin version of Dramione in appearance and character that just changing the name and bits of the setting/context around doesn’t really do much 🧐 just a little think piece.

Thank you for such a nuanced take! I agree the risk this could pose to all fan fiction is great. Many great writers practiced with fan fiction and were able to grow from there to write full original stories. I would have preferred to have a traditional publisher help SenLinYu write a new story, not scrub Manacled.
