@dollartreedinners: Day 2 of cooking through my freezer in October! Tonight’s dinner: bratwursts I picked up half-off. Truthfully, I don’t really know what else to do with brats besides the classic bun + peppers + onions + mustard. But lately I’ve been inspired by @nic0le.sven and her once-a-month grocery shopping + no waste cooking style. In that spirit, I decided to try making my own hot dog buns with ingredients I already had. Technically, yes, I made bread… but the flavor and texture was definitely closer to a yeasty dinner roll than a soft, sweet bun. It was messy, time-consuming, and honestly? I would’ve rather just bought the $2 pack. Guess I need to test some other recipes. As for the brats, I sliced them up to stretch them further, sautéed them with peppers and onions, and that was dinner. We do bratwurst poutine - base of fries, bratwurst, peppers and onions, coleslaw, brown or mushroom gravy, cheese curds (or crumbled cheese if you can’t get them/expensive). We’d do this whenever big bags of potatoes were on sale and make a bunch of fries to have.

Okay but slicing up the brat is great too bc I like a lot of peppers & onions, and with the whole brat + the bun I can barely fit it in my mouth. Gimme like a 2:2 peppers:brat ratio!

i only had 2 & 1/2 hoagie buns left and cut them in half to make "overstuffed" philly cheese steaks the other night. no one noticed I planned poorly, everyone was full, and we still had leftovers 🤣🤣

in our house we do brats over sauerkraut (w/ juices. if not alot of juice add like 1c of broth) that's on top of taters. top with red onion, thyme and red pepper flakes. brown brats in a pan. cover and bake in the oven until taters are done.

We do Scrambled Eggs w/leftover Brats, Peppers & Onions. (diced potatoes sometimes) Top w/a bit of Cheddar. Yummy.
