Men… we’ve gotta do better. How are we anything other than embarrassed that women would rather choose a bear over a man? I was at dinner the other night with some friends and one gal said, “Must be nice to be a man and just go wherever you want.” And I’ll be honest… I haven’t stopped thinking about that since. Because most men don’t even think twice about walking to their car at night. Going for a run alone. Stopping for gas. Walking through a parking garage. But for a lot of women? Safety is something they constantly have to think about. And that should bother us. Deeply. This world is hard enough already. Women and children should not have to move through life wondering if they’re safe around the very people who were designed to protect them. As men, we were given the strength, ability, and responsibility to be providers and protectors. Not predators. Not manipulators. Not men who make people feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or afraid. And shame on us for every time we’ve stayed silent while other men acted in ways that destroy trust, innocence, and security. Because this isn’t about “not all men.” It’s about the fact that enough women have experienced enough pain, fear, harassment, abuse, manipulation, or violence that choosing a wild animal somehow feels safer. Think about how heartbreaking that really is. Real masculinity isn’t dominance. It isn’t intimidation. It isn’t control. Real masculinity is creating safety. Leading with integrity. Protecting people who are weaker than you. Making the people around you feel secure, valued, and respected. Men… little boys are watching us. Daughters are learning from us what they should tolerate.
