Wait wait wait. There’s a huge issue in this debate that no one ever seems to bring up. In the manga it makes perfect sense that they are just visual effects as the fighting is more grounded. The show is much more sensationalized with characters flying around or shattering earth with thier attacks or the wind hashira shredding enemies with blasts of wind. The show plays more with the powers while the manga uses them as visual metaphors. That’s why there’s such a divide and honestly it doesn’t really matter either way.

Ehh I’m not a complainer but I disagree, especially since there are moments that saying it’s not a power/magic makes no sense. You have a clip in this video where Sanemi swings his sword and a whole room on demons die, Tanjiro uses breathing techniques to stop falling when he fought the arrow demon early on, Zenitsu literally flies through the air zigzagging through the sky with his first form, they aren’t just regular people swinging swords. Even if the fire isn’t fire (which is debatable bc Daki literally say she felt burned and can’t regenerate because of cuts she received by Tanjiro) the forms are some kind of magic, otherwise they could never stand a chance. The gap between the demon slayers and the demons is already wide enough since they regenerate. I’m not upset, it just seems like an unnecessary decision for the story.

I love demon slayer but making the breathing techniques purely visual illusions instead of physical elements is literally nonsensical. the humans constantly display super human abilities, even the fact that swinging a sword creates an illusion makes zero sense. (yes, in-universe people can see the effects and the better the swordsman, the for vivd the visuals are). I understand what gotouge was trying to achieve but they failed in making it make fit the rules of the world. slayer marks ✅️breathing to stop wounds ✅️smelling emotions ✅️swords that create actual fire ❌️swords that create the illusion of fire ✅️swords that change colour based on your affinity for swinging them a certain way ✅️it goes on and on.

Bro I didn’t watch the video yet but I completely agree. I used to hate on it cuz they weren’t real but that’s like the whole point. These aren’t supposed to be super powers they’re supposed to regular people fighting against super powered demons that’s why demons are so scary. They aren’t nearly as scary if you can do all this crazy stuff. That’s why it’s called breathing techniques. It’s not magical energy like chakra or ki it’s just controlling your breathing and expert swordsmanship. Granted they are able to achieve supernatural speeds and stuff but that’s because of the breathing training not because of some magic energy

My thing is why can tanjiro hear thunder from like 100 feet away when zenetsu fights in season 1? During the fight with the arrow guy tanjiro used sword techniques in the air to brace his impact from rapid directional changes and to brace tbe impact when he was brought back down to the ground. breathing isnt going to save your sword from braking after rapid speed impact with the ground from you swinging it + the rapid movement. thunder boy can move at god like speed twice a day... when they breathe heavy the ground breaks around them while they stand and for thunder boy lightning is all around while he is standing there aura farming why do you need to add the lightning to the aura farm and not just the swings if it isnt real? idc if other demon slayers can see it its not consistent and thats what makes the story worse for me. like do I enjoy it sure did I cry when my girl died yes but this anime wouldve been better for me if the author was more consistent with this whole breathing techniques thing

I like that the powerscale never goes off the charts, all power ups the slayers get are based on swordmanship, and not crazy power/magic.
