Dr. Mike points are interesting, but I wouldnt say every one actually has one knife, his proper name is " navaja bandolera " because it was tipical of the bandits. This is because its size, versatility and the intimidation factor that produces its sound when open it. The most crucial point in my opinion is that the armies were financed by noble and rich families all over the country.

even today spanish knife culture is alive in rural areas, most men carry them everywhere and it's a common birthday gift for boys once they become teenagers. I have several navajas that were gifted to me by male family members, though it's not that common for women to carry them anymore.

Carrying swords and other weapons had been illegal since the rule of Charles the First and the Comuneros Revolt, that's why the navaja, an every day tool, ended up flourishing

I genuinely wonder how these theses are made. It must take forever to find a topic that hasn’t been talked about yet that is still interesting enough and has enough accessible sources on it to have a full thesis written about it.

Wow, thank you for the video very cool. When the Bourbon family came to spain as new royals they brought with themselves the pro-centralization ideas from France, one of them was making illegal carrying weapons in all the empire to make it easier in case of revolt or secession (After the war of succession in 1700, the first instances of Catalanism, basque country and andalusia independence, due to the divided country supporting different monarchs). After this, the navaja was the most preferred carry on weapon for duel, as it was not a sword, even tho some of them had even 50 cm long blade.

Spain to this day has a fierce national identity and hunting culture. A shame that Napoleon’s huberis saw the weak monarchy as his only true obstacle. What a compelling analysis from Dr. Mike.

pro tip for guys trying to talk about guerrilla with a spanish person, pronounce it as “guerri-ja”, if you pronounce it as “guerrilla” you’ll sound like you’re saying “gorila”; lla in spanish is pronounced more like an English ja, as in “jar”
