Breaking Barriers: The first female PhD Graduate in Electrical Power Engineering at DUT, Dr. Ntombenhle Mazibuko The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment celebrates Dr. Ntombenhle Mazibuko, a graduate in Electrical Power Engineering whose story reflects resilience, determination, and passion for growth. Born and raised in Nqutu, a village in northern KwaZulu-Natal, she describes herself as “someone who is very ambitious, results-driven, and who thrives for excellence.” Her academic journey at DUT has been remarkable, stretching from her first-year diploma in 2008 to the completion of her Doctor of Engineering. Reflecting on her motivation to pursue a doctorate, she explained, “When I joined DUT in 2016 as a technical staff member, I only had a B-Tech, which was enough for me at that time. However, being in academia and seeing young academics with doctorates and professorships really motivated me to step out of my comfort zone.” Her research addresses one of the most pressing challenges of our time energy security. “Development of an adaptive protection scheme for compensated transmission networks with a significant penetration of renewable energy sources is underway,” she shared. Her work directly supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7, which calls for access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030. The journey to this milestone was not without difficulty. Balancing the roles of student, staff member, and mother of three required sacrifice and resilience. “The obstacles I encountered during my studies included a significant shift in my career, and finding a balance between work, education, and parenting proved to be quite challenging,” she reflected. #dutebe #thefutureliveshere #dutebespringgraduation #womeninengineering #durbantiktok
