Directed by Katsuhito Ishii, this wonderfully strange Japanese film follows a family living in the countryside, where everyone seems to be dealing with their own little obsession, dream or problem. There’s a mother trying to return to animation, a father who works as a hypnotist, a teenager experiencing first love, an eccentric grandfather, and a young girl who is followed by a giant version of herself. It’s funny, surreal, unpredictable and surprisingly heartfelt. The film jumps between everyday family moments, absurd comedy, animation and quiet emotional scenes without ever feeling like it needs to explain itself. It’s the kind of movie where you just sit back and let it happen. If you’re looking for something completely different, give this one a chance.
