I kinda started realizing it was a bit of a “scam” when they completely declassified Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and said we don’t meet any of the classification criteria, even though archer Simon Powell met more than double the threshold, but then they’ve gone and made certain exceptions for people who have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in aquatic sports. It’s basically a bunch of able bodied people telling disabled people “You’re not disabled enough for our liking. Your disability isn’t valid at this time.”

I work with USA ParaClimbing and it’s the same thing. It’s about who’s disabled enough to qualify for a Para classification, while also being the “least disabled” in the category. It’s really not a great system. They also do not account for pain, and pain isn’t considered with classification, which also is unfair bc someone with a physically painful disability vs someone who is disabled but doesnt experience pain is just not comparable.

US Para Ski team doc here. the ski and snowboard athletes compete with a conversion factor so athletes can compete across categories. its not perfect either, but it's a starting point. great video 🚀

it really feels like the IPC is so focused on the potential “threat” of the possibility of an able bodied person trying to fake their way in that theyre not focused at all at the real unfairness/cheating that is actually occurring

I love talking about the b1-b3 spectrum for blind athletes. Goalball is a good way to make it semi-fair considering mandatory eyeshades. A B3 is always going to have the slight-significant edge.

hii s10 paraswimmer here, my disability was so rare they actually had no idea where to classify me, everyone thinks I should be lower but because not much is known about my disability they put me in the least disabled class and told me take it or leave it
