I think this is a big thing in German/Dutch/Scandinavian culture too, which is why the Midwest is the way it is. I don’t think people are intentionally passive aggressive as much as they’re so repressed that anger just seeps out any way it can

I’m south Asian and most of our families tend to me like this. I grew up avoidant because of this and don’t know how to break free

It’s even worse when you leave your home and you can tell other people also come from repressed families so you can’t show your joy around them either, even if you’ve healed the repression inside yourself. People get so triggered by it, and I know because I used to get triggered by it too when I was unhealed.

i was socialized similarly, once i turned 18 i moved away and did a lot of shadow work and inner child work during that time. now im 27, one of the more 'bubbly' people at family gatherings. i mourn my childhood years spent repressed and serious all the time but in the present its gotten a lot better (:

Okay question. Is this why I feel “icky” whenever my parents show any kind of big emotion? I get physically uncomfortable when they show too much excitement, anger, annoyance…anything.

I could feel the extent to which my joy irritated my mother when I was a child.

How do you heal from this ? This is so niche that it takes someone who has experienced it to really understand it

unfortunately this joyless contract expands even further, outside of the family unit...into jobs, or any circles of people (like club environments or flatmates living in the same house). It's like you can't be too overjoyed because those negative influences around you will be drawn like moth to a flame and ruin it. Not loosing your spark when surrounded by negative people it's a major flex in today's world

The content here is deceptive in the sense that it’s about 100 times deeper and more insightful than it looks. Deep thinking from a very fine human being. Thank you.

They taught me to be quiet, I became quiet even within myself, no noise no nothing. And then they are telling me why I am always “annoyed” at any noise/mess they create. You just took that away from me as a child and now wondering why I am annoyed you have it as an adult?

I used to get told off for being happy. ‘What are you smiling about?’ They never smiled or laughed unless it was at someone else’s misfortune

as an adult I see myself as a very creative and emotional person. Every time I go home, which I don't do often. the first thing my mom says before I go on a plane is "don't be you while you're here" the amount of times I want to cancel or skip that flight after that line😅😅
