She spent a lifetime showing us that animals are not “others,” but beings with families, feelings, and rich inner lives. She taught us to honor them, to listen to them, to see them. Not just chimpanzees or wild animals, but also farm animals who are destined to become food. Now, the brilliant torch she carried is in our hands. On this day meant to celebrate and protect animals, may we reflect on her work — and continue it with courage, tenderness, and resolve.
