Yeah, but there is a difference between expat and immigrant. An expat is someone who moves to another country, but has the intention of moving back to their home country eventually. An immigrant is someone who moves with no intention to move back to their home country.

I used the migrant center for some help with paperwork when i moved abroad and i was talking to some people in the US about it. I said they help migrants and immigrants here, they were confused and asked if i was an immigrant. They couldn’t see an American as an immigrant in another country.

I felt that in Europe expat is for someone who left the country of origin (expatriated) but haven't settled yet somewhere specific and long term. Expat might be temporary while emigrant implies forever.

Basically, expatriate and immigrant are the same but different in the reasons. An immigrant leaves his country for reasons of survival (war, famine, etc.), an expatriate leaves his country for reasons of comfort (work, family, etc.). In the end, yes it's the same, but the reasons for leaving are different. This is where the denominator is more or less appropriate depending on the situation.

I understand the idea, but as long as you don't have to go through all the official procedures that immigrants do, you are expatriates who have a much easier time than immigrants.
