A Salinas man has been sentenced to four years in state prison after a police pursuit that prosecutors say reached 100 mph on Highway 101 and nearly ended in a collision with a bicyclist. Henry Lechuga, 36, was sentenced for taking a vehicle with priors and evading officers while driving recklessly, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office announced September 15. According to prosecutors, Salinas police found Lechuga in the passenger seat of a vehicle on Navajo Drive on May 9 and told him he was under arrest on an outstanding warrant. After the driver got out, he moved into the driver’s seat, took the keys and drove away. The DA’s Office says he ran stop signs and red lights, drove into opposing lanes, and reached 60 mph in residential areas and 100 mph on Highway 101. He abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, evaded the initial search, and was later taken into custody. The Salinas Police Department investigated the case.
