Alum is a dehydrator and used in pickling or keeping food fresh. Also, a natural deodorant. It's safe. I think since he's tasted it if you sprinkle it on your lead rope while practicing at home he may get a new habit of leaving it alone. 👍

Irish Spring Soap was the only thing that could keep my gelding from chewing on the cross ties, he will learn, Tazz is young. Gir only needed the soap treatment for a week or two lol

I had a gelding that would do this, so I soaked a cotton lead in alum & water mixture and used to to lead and tie him. It still works after it drys as the cotton soaks it in the fibers. He figured it out in about a week and stopped doing it for the next 18 years of his life. He was a walker but my Appy colt I started from day one with the same cotton soaked lead and he thankfully never picked up the habit.

My dad liked lemon juice to break this habit. They don't like the sour and it's safe.

You do this for a bit and then don’t put it on his mouth but on the line so he gets that as a negative reinforcer if he takes the line. I have no idea about the feasibility of this in horses but that is behavior modification that works in dogs.

I had a huge horse, 17 hh who we would do English showmanship, and he used to bite and hold on to me and the line, and we used a small tack, rested in my fingers,Tik tok trainers are about to throw a fit but it worked. He learned respect.

I had a 3yr old that did that too a trainer said put the chain in his mouth like a bit or on the gums like race horses. correct him by a simple fast jerk not hard to break skin but enough he gets the point for bad behavior. It worked for my gelding. I did it with practice a few times for the show and come show time he stopped 100%

I don't know much about that but I'm wondering can you turn it into a paste and put it on the lead that way if he goes to reach the lead that is the consequence of what it's going to taste like I don't know if anybody else will agree or disagree on this but instead of putting it directly into his mouth making a paste and putting on the lead chain just a thought.
